Flashes Settle for Fourth Place at Virginia Duals

HAMPTON, Va. - Kent State and No. 15 Virginia Tech each won five matches in Saturday's battle for third place, but bonus points made the difference in the Hokies' 19-16 win at the Virginia Duals. The Golden Flashes dropped six of 10 matches against No. 13 Virginia to begin their day inside Hampton Coliseum with a 22-12 setback.  Sophomore Mack McGuire and junior Caleb Marsh each went 2-0 on the day, completing perfect 4-0 weekends.
McGuire provided the team's lone bonus points of the day with an 8-0 major decision over Virginia Tech's Dennis Gustafson. A 4-0 shutout by junior Tyler Small extended the Flashes' lead to 7-3, but the biggest surprise of the day came when sophomore Ian Miller was pinned in the first period by Sal Mastriani.
The Hokies extended their lead to 16-7 after six bouts, but Marsh ignited a comeback with the first of three straight Kent State wins. Â Sophomores Sam Wheeler and Cole Baxter each beat Top 25 opponents to tie the dual 16-16 going into heavyweight.
Tied 1-1 after two periods, a Ty Walz takedown made the difference in a 3-2 win over redshirt freshman Mimmo Lytle.
Earlier in the day, Marsh gave the Golden Flashes a 12-10 lead over Virginia after seven matches with a 3-2 victory over No. 10 Steve Doty. However, the Cavaliers responded with three straight wins. The key moment for Virginia came at 184 when Jon Fausey scored a takedown on Wheeler in the closing seconds for a 6-5 victory.
McGuire, Miller and Marsh all earned revenge against Cavaliers, whom they lost to earlier this season (Nov. 10) at the Virginia Tech Duals. Sophomore Michael DePalma also claimed a victory against Virginia with a 7-2 decision.Â
Kent State's wrestling and gymnastics teams will each host North Carolina State inside the M.A.C. Center Sunday, Jan. 19 at 2 p.m. in their second annual Beauty and the Beast competition.
