AKRON, Ohio – In the first game of the PNC Wagon Wheel Challenge for the 2013-14 spring semester, Kent State (3-13, 0-5) was unable to pull off a win at Akron (8-8, 2-3), falling 51-77 Saturday afternoon (Jan. 18).

The Golden Flashes were able to keep it close at the onset, finding themselves down by only three points at the second media timeout of the game. But then turnovers and fouls began to add up for Kent State and they found themselves down 19-36 at the half.

In the second, the Zips came out with a hot hand, shooting 50% from the floor and 87.5% from the free-throw line to put the game out of reach.

Both teams struggled with turnovers and fouls in the game; there was a combined 48 turnovers and 48 fouls in the contest. Kent State was responsible for 27 of each statistic. Akron was able to score 28 points off those turnovers, while the Flashes were only able to score 13 points in the same category. Ashley Evans, Amber Dunlap and Montia Johnson all fouled out of the game.

The battle on the board was a close one, as Kent State grabbed 34 while Akron had 39. The Golden Flashes' bench was responsible for 24 of the team's points, including a team-high 14 point performance by Rachel Mendelsohn.

Johnson also reached double-digits in scoring with 11 points. She and Mendelsohn tied for a team-high six rebounds. Mikell Chinn contributed with six assists and six steals, while CiCi Shannon kept on her season-pace with three blocks.
