ALPHARETTA, Ga.- The Kent State University men's golf team finished the U.S. Collegiate Championship in 15th place after carding a three-round score of 892 to finish 28-over-par at the Golf Club of Georgia's Lakeside Course.
No. 9 Texas captured the team title after going 11-under today to finish 21-under 843 and Virginia was just one stroke back at 20-under 844. Virginia's Derek Bard won the individual title at 15-under 201, followed by teammate Denny McCarthy at 9-under 207. To view complete team/individual standings, go to golfstat.com.
"We played quite well today," said Director of Golf/Men's Golf Coach Herb Page. "We are definitely not happy with the finish we had, but you have to understand how tough the competition is and we're just not ready for that."
The Golden Flashes had a solid third round, finishing their final 18 holes just 4-over 292. Freshman Ian Holt (75-72-71=218) fired a 1-under-par 71 in his final round to finish 2-over in the tournament for 32nd place.
Freshman Chase Johnson (76-76-72=224) was Kent State's next finisher at 59th after going even par in his final round today, and rookie J.D. Hughes (79-71-76=226) went 4-over in his final round to earn 65th. Rounding out the scorers was sophomore Josh Whalen (77-77-73=227), who carded a 1-over to place 69th, and junior Sebastian Bendsen was 9-over-81 for a 78th place finish.
"Ian (Holt) finally jumped up and had a nice a week," added Page. "Chase (Johnson) and J.D. (Hughes) also had good finishes. These three guys are freshman and will continue to get better."
"The U.S. Collegiate is a great tournament," Page said. "We made a lot of progress this fall, but we have a lot of work to do. We are going in the right direction."
The Golden Flashes had their best finish of the fall when they placed fourth at the Jack Nicklaus Invitational on Sept. 29. The week prior to that, Kent State earned sixth at the Inverness Intercollegiate.
That was the final event of the fall that the Golden Flashes will play in as a team. The 2015 spring season will start at Oakbourne Country Club March 2-3 at the Louisiana Classics.
