CHARLESTON, S.C. – Eric Lauer set the momentum on the mound for Kent State's (8-6) bats to find rhythm to pick up a 8-6 victory over the College of Charleston on Friday night (Mar. 14).
Lauer pitched six innings in the start to earn his fourth win of the season with three hits, two runs, three walks and three strikeouts.
"Eric Lauer set the tone for us on the mound," said Head Coach Jeff Duncan. "He had really good stuff tonight and that helped our offense."
Kent State plated the game's first run in the 4th inning when Cody Koch was walked with bases loaded, scoring Justin Wagler who led off the inning with a double.
The 6th inning looked eerily similar, as Zarley Zalewski led off with a double and then Tommy Monnot was issued a bases-loaded walk to score the second run of the game.
After Jon Wilson hit a shot that just barely went foul at the top of the wall down the right field line, he followed up with a base hit up the middle to make it a 4-0 game.
College of Charleston got on the board in the 6th on a single and homerun. The two hits were just the second and third of the game for the Cougars.
Kent State padded its lead in the 7th after two walks and a RBI base hit by Koch and a two-RBI base hit by Monnot.
It became an 8-2 lead for the Golden Flashes in the 8th after Alex Miklos singled, stole two bases and came home on a passed ball.
The Cougars were able to plate four runs in the bottom of the 9th to make things interesting, but Eric Dorsch entered the game, threw three pitches and sat the batter down swinging to earn the Flashes' an 8-6 win.
"We took a step forward today as a team," Duncan said. "They responded well after last weekend and that's huge."
Zalewski went 2-for-3 with a double ad Jon Wilson also picked up two hits with a double in the contest.
The Golden Flashes face Appalachian State on Saturday (Mar. 15) at 11:00am.
