DAVIDSON, N.C. – Senior Corey Conners finished third individually to lead the No. 22/24 Kent State men's golf team to a second-place finish at the 2014 Davidson College Invitational Tuesday afternoon.
No. 48 Tennessee (293-294 =587) completed its second straight sub-300 round to capture the team title by 11 strokes over the Golden Flashes (304-294=598). The two-day event was played on the Par 72, 7.208-yard River Run Country Club.
"We played very well today, matching Tennessee for the low round," said Head Coach Herb Page. "I was very encouraged by the way we played the back nine. The whole team finished by birdying the 18th hole, so we ended on a great note and have some momentum to build on going into next week."
Conners carded a second-round 72 after birdying the final two holes of the 36-hole event at 142 (+1) to place third in the standings. Teammate Taylor Pendrith made five birdies in the final round to place fourth with a 146 (+2), and Kyle Kmiecik finished in 11th with a 150 (+6).
"Corey (Conners) had a great tournament," added Page. "He was steady as usual with two birdies and two bogeys. Taylor (Pendrith) also had a typical round with a bunch of birdies and Kyle ended up with a very good 73."
Kent State's Sebastian Bendsen tied for 27th with a 157 (+13) and Kody Fry tallied a 161 (+17).
The Golden Flashes will now prepare for the General Hackler Championships hosted at TPC of Myrtle Beach on March 10-11.
