Buckwalter and McGuire Named Academic All-MAC

Kent State sophomores Mack McGuire (Upper St. Clair, Pa.) and Tyler Buckwalter (Mill Hall, Pa.) were among the 10 wrestlers named to the 2014 Academic All-Mid-American Conference Team Wednesday, as selected by conference faculty representatives. Of the nine MAC wrestling institutions, Kent State was one of just three teams with multiple wrestlers receiving the honor.
McGuire, a speech pathology major, earned his second straight trip to the NCAA Championships by finishing third in the 133-pound bracket of the MAC Championships. At 27-15, he finished second on the team in total victories. McGuire went 15-9 in dual meets, placed third at the Navy Classic and seventh at the Southern Scuffle. He also went 4-0 at the Virginia Duals.
Buckwalter, a health and physical education major, carries a 3.92 cumulative grade point average in his third academic year at Kent State. After sitting out the beginning of the season with an injury, he finished 4-3 in MAC duals. Buckwalter then placed fifth at the MAC Championships.
 In addition, fifth-year senior T.J. Keklak (Johnstown, Pa.) was one of 10 other wrestlers to earn Honorable Mention on the Academic All-MAC Team. The lone senior and team captain, Keklak won nine matches, including a dual meet victory at Northern Iowa.
Kent State recently completed its sixth straight season with an All-American. The Golden Flashes tied for third in the Mid-American Conference standings and will return each of its 10 starters for the 2014-15 season.
