Offensive Onslaught Clinches First Conference Sweep for Kent State

ATHENS, Ohio - An 18-run, 19 hit day by Kent State (19-10, 7-2 MAC) capped off the team's first conference sweep of the season as they beat Ohio (5-23, 1-8 MAC) 18-2 on Sunday afternoon (Apr. 6).
The Golden Flashes now sit in first place in the Mid-American Conference East Division after an Akron loss to Miami. They are one game back overall in the MAC after Central Michigan lost to Buffalo on Sunday.
Kent State has scored 66 runs in the last five games and has had ten or more hits in nine of the last 11 games.
For the sixth time in the last seven games, the Golden Flashes put a crooked number up in the first inning. Jon Wilson started the game with a single and came home on a double by Alex Miklos. After a double play ball to register two outs, Kent State went on to get five singles and two walks to bat around and take a 7-0 lead before Ohio had a chance to come to the plate.
"It was a good weekend for us," said Head Coach Jeff Duncan. "I loved the way we came out in the top of that first inning. It's great for our pitching staff, especially when we have a pitching staff like this, to get some runs across the board early. And we've been doing a good job of expanding that lead, as well. That's a sign of good, winning baseball."
Kent State tacked on another run in the 2nd, two in the 3rd and one more in the 5th before a big five-run 7th. Those five late runs came on a leadoff base hit by Zach Beckner then two errors, two walks, a single and a double by Sawyer Polen.
But the Flashes weren't done yet, as Sawyer Polen smacked another double in the second and Shane Biles followed him with his first career hit, a RBI double to right center. Beckner then followed with another single to close out the damage in the inning.
Ohio's two runs came in the 2nd off of Brian Clark who earned his third win of the season after six innings of work with four hits, four walks and two strikeouts. Tim Faix followed in relief to retire five in a row on 15 pitches, 14 of which were strikes. Eli Martin closed out the game on the mound with one hit in 1.1 innings, needing just nine pitches.
Miklos, Polen and Beckner all had a four-hit day as Polen and Wilson led the way with four RBI each. Miklos and Polen each had two doubles. Wilson went 3-for-4 at the plate while Sutton finished 2-for-4.
"All these guys are working extremely hard," Duncan said. "I'm really excited about the depth of this team and also our batting order. The bottom of our order is starting to click, which is good; it balances out our lineup. That's a really good sign right there."
The Golden Flashes return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Niles, Ohio, to play Youngstown in a doubleheader beginning at 4:00pm. The team then returns home as they host Miami next weekend in the start of a ten-game homestand.
