Flashes Picked Fifth in Preseason Poll

DETROIT – After closing out the 2013 season with a pair of convincing victories, Kent State was picked to finish fifth of seven teams in the Mid-American Conference East Division on Wednesday. The poll was announced at the league's annual Football Media Day at Ford Field in Detroit and was determined by members of the league's media members.
"It doesn't matter where you start, it's where you finish and that's what we focus on," Head Coach Paul Haynes said. "We have to put ourselves in a position in November, to go win a championship. And that's all that really matters. We focus on how we prepare and if we put in the work, we'll get rewarded at the end of year."
On Tuesday, Haynes along with running back Trayion Durham, defensive lineman Nate Terhune and graduate assistants Colin Ferrell and Bill Nickell, all participated in the MAC's Youth Football Clinic at Ford Field.

Bowling Green was selected to win the East Division and the 2014 Marathon MAC Football Championship Game. Toledo was picked to win the West. Akron is projected to finish second in the East standings, while Northern Illinois claimed the second spot in the West.
For the first time since 2003, the Golden Flashes' quest for MAC supremacy will be tested right out of the gate with an Aug. 30 opening game against Ohio. The Bobcats were picked to finish third in the East.
Kent State returns a number of experienced players to both sides of the ball as well as special teams. Four offensive linemen saw significant action last season as the Flashes return their starting quarterback, top running back and top receiver from 2013. Several Golden Flashes have gained preseason accolades including defensive lineman Nate Terhune, running back Trayion Durham, punter Anthony Melchiori and tight end Casey Pierce.
In Kent State's last three games, opponents averaged just 11.7 points and 228.0 yards of offense.
