
Pendrith & Conners Help Canada to Second Place at Men’s World Amateur

KARUIZAWA, Japan - Team Canada, led by former Kent State golfers Taylor Pendrith '14 and Corey Conner '14 fell short by just two strokes to finish in second place at 36-under par at the 2014 men's World Amateur Team Championship at Karuizawa 72 Golf East.
Sweden was fourth at 538; Argentina was fifth at 539; Australia, England and France were tied for sixth at 540; Scotland was ninth at 542 and Switzerland was 10th at 544. Japan, the host team, finished tied for 29th.
Canada was just six shots back entering the final day of the tournament, came back to share the lead going into the final hole. Conners, a Listowel, Ont., native left his birdie attempt short, which allowed Bryson Dechambeau to sink the winning birdie.
Adam Svensson of Surrey, B.C. (69-69-66-65 –269) and Conners (66-69-67-68—270) combined for a final round 11-under 137 on the Iriyama Course. Pendrith, of Richmond Hill, Ont. (68-67-69-70—274), shot a non-counting final round 70 to round out the trio.
Canada has now earned its fifth silver medal in men's World Amateur history.
The tournament is conducted by the International Golf Federation and rotates among three geographical zones in the world (Asia-Pacific, the Americas and Europe-Africa) every other year. This year's tournament field comprised of 50 teams from around the world and was played on the Oshitate Course at the Karuizawa Prince Hotel and Resort Sept. 3-14.
