For the third consecutive season, the Kent State wrestling team finished with the highest grade point average among Mid-American Conference full-time members during the 2013-14 academic year. The conference office measures GPAs and credit hours earned for each team's entire roster.
"It starts with recruiting," Head Coach Jim Andrassy said. "We've really tried to identify the right type of person and sometimes that means passing on guys who are a little more talented. The ones who do well in the classroom are also the ones who tend to manage their time well and succeed in everything they do."
Earlier this offseason, the Golden Flashes were recognized by the NWCA for having the 13th highest GPA among Division I institutions.Â
"Our academic support here is incredible," Andrassy said. "It starts with Angie Hull (Assistant Athletic Director/Academic & Student Services). I don't know of many other schools that get the kind of support that we do."
Kent State's academic feat of three straight seasons is a program first. In recent history, wrestling is the only sport at Kent State to earn such a milestone.
Last season, the Mid-American Conference had the second most NCAA qualifiers per team in the nation and produced nine All-Americans from six different teams. The Flashes have had at least one All-American in six consecutive seasons.
