CLEVELAND, Ohio – Junior Madison Helterbran (North Canton, Ohio) scored in the 82nd minute to lead the Kent State women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over host Cleveland State on Sunday afternoon on Krenzler Field. The win is Kent State's third consecutive victory and improves the Golden Flashes to 4-1-0 on the year. Cleveland State drops to 3-4.
"It was a great road win," said Head Coach Rob Marinaro. "It is always a very difficult game with Cleveland State. I am very pleased with our overall team effort."
Kent State controlled most of the game and held a commanding 17-3 lead in shots in 90 minutes, including a 6-0 edge in the first period. The Flashes' kept Cleveland State goalkeeper, Sarah Wood, busy today, firing off a total of seven shots on target.
It wasn't until Kent State was awarded a free kick after senior Stephanie Haugh (Richmond Hill, Ontario) was fouled that the Flashes' would finally find the back of the net. Helterbran tallied her season's first goal at the 82:19 mark when she put one past Wood in the left corner of the goal on her kick just outside the box.
Junior Stephanie Senn (Grand Island, N.Y.) recorded one save to earn her fourth shutout of the year. Overall, Senn has played 455:21 and has allowed just one goal (0.20 gaa) and has 22 saves (.957%).
Sophomore Jenna Hellstrom (Sudbury, Ontario) led the Kent State attack with eight shots, including two on goal, while rookie Kristen Brots (Naperville, Ill.) tallied four shots on goal.
Kent State will travel to Louisville for a 1 p.m. game on Sunday, Sept. 14 before returning to action on Zoeller Field. The Flashes' will then host Oakland University at 4 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 19.
