TOLEDO, Ohio – The Golden Flashes got ahead early but could not contain their lead down the stretch against the Rockets at Savage Arena Wednesday night, losing 67-49.
Kent State is now 2-11 on the season and 0-2 in Mid-American Conference play while Toledo improves to 9-4, 2-0.
Both teams scored on their opening possessions before a two-minute drought. The Golden Flashes then took the edge as the Rockets turned over the ball and Kent State capitalized to take as much as a six-point lead.
The game was tied at 17 and 21 in the first half. Toledo earned its first lead late, at the 4:24 mark, but never got more than a three-point advantage as Kent State shot an even 50% from the floor in the opening 20 minutes. The Rockets led 34-31 at the break.
Both teams again entered a scoring drought midway through the second half, as neither team scored for a span of three minutes.
Down the stretch the Rockets were ultimately able to take control due to turnovers and fouls from the Golden Flashes. Toledo made 19 of 27 foul shots in the game en route to the 67-49 victory.
Kent State finished shooting 40% from the field but was outrebounded 45-28 despite that margin being nearly even at halftime.
The Golden Flashes had a strong night from inside as CiCi Shannon led with 12 points and seven rebounds. Jordan Korinek netted nine points, all in the opening half.
The team returns to the M.A.C. Center on Saturday when Bowling Green makes the trip to Kent for a 2 p.m. contest. Tickets are available by calling 330-672-2244.
