ALPHARETTA, Ga. – The Kent State men's golf squad dropped to 14th place after round two of the U.S. Collegiate at The Golf Club of Georgia. The Golden Flashes carded a 9-over 297 in round two for a two-round total of 16-over 592.
The elite 17-team field features seven of the current Top-10 teams competing, 12 of the Top-25 and 16 of the Top-50. No. 5 Wake Forest sits in the lead with a 7-under 569, followed by No. 1 Auburn at 6-under 570 and No. 4 Florida State at 4-under 572. For complete results, visit www.golfstatresults.com.
"We came up short today," said Director of Golf/Head Men's Golf Coach Herb Page. "We played really good and were hanging around in 7-8-9 place for most of the day. But there were about three holes where we didn't play good … we didn't finish the round off. With the great field we are playing against we just can't do that. We paid the price."
Sophomore Ian Holt (Stow, Ohio) leads the Golden Flashes in 27th place on the individual leaderboard with a 2-over 146 after two rounds. Holt carded a 2-over 74 this afternoon after combining for five bogeys and just three birdies.
Freshman Bjarki Petursson, who shot 1-under par yesterday, dropped down 25 spots on the leaderboard after going 5-over 77 for a two-round total of 4-over 148. Peturrson's first nine was plagued with bogeys as he made the turn at 5-over, but settled down on the back nine with just one bogey and a birdie.
Sophomores Chase Johnson (Barberton, Ohio) and Spencer Dobbs (Whitby, Ontario) dropped five spots and are in a tie for 64th at 7-over 151. Both carded rounds of 3-over 75. After two bogeys and a birdie on the front nine, Dobbs birdied hole 12 and 13 to go even par. But a bogey on 14 and a double on 17 put Dobbs back up to 3-over to finish his round.
Johnson had a solid front nine with two birdies and a bogey to turn at 1-under, but two bogeys and a double on the back put him up to 3-over for the round.
Rookie Gisli Sveinbergsson had the low round for the Golden Flashes with a 1-over 73. Sveinbergsson's two-round total is 10-over 154 and he is in 80th on the leaderboard.
Kent State is paired with UCLA and Oklahoma State in tomorrow's final round. The Golden Flashes will tee off starting at 8:00 a.m.
