KENT, Ohio – The Kent State women's soccer team (11-6-2, 7-4-0 MAC) defeated Ohio University (5-13-0, 3-8-0 MAC) 1-0 on Thursday afternoon at Zoeller Field. Junior Jenna Hellstrom (Sudbury, Ontario) scored the lone goal in the 61st minute to tally her 11th of the season.Â
With the victory, Kent State finished fourth in the MAC overall, and second in the MAC East. The team also remained undefeated at home with a 7-0-1 record while on Zoeller Field. The Golden Flashes will now host Miami (OH) in the quarterfinals of the MAC Tournament at 1 p.m. on Sunday at Dix Stadium.
The Golden Flashes dominated from the start, out-shooting the Bobcats 14-5, including six on target, in the first 45 minutes of play. Hellstrom had the first look on net in the sixth minute when redshirt sophomore Donavan Capehart (Orient, Ohio) played the ball through to Hellstrom but her shot got picked up by Ohio goalkeeper Taylor Smith. Sophomore Kristen Brots (Naperville, Ill.) added a shot in the ninth minute, and Hayden Pascoe (Belle Vernon, Pa.) tried to get one through in the 13th, but Smith made the save.
Kent State continued its offensive attack throughout the first half and kept Smith busy in goal. She made six saves to keep the game scoreless at the intermission.
In the opening minutes of the second period, Hellstrom got the ball to Pascoe but Smith came up with a huge save, and Hellstrom followed with a shot to the back post in the 58th minute that grazed the crossbar. It wasn't until the 62nd minute that Hellstrom would tally the game-winner. Sophomore Jaime Eiben (Mentor Ohio) wins the ball and feeds it into Hellstrom in the box who drills one past a diving Smith to take a 1-0 lead.
The shots were even in the second period, 7-7, but Kent State led in shots 21-12 for the game. The Golden Flashes also had a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Freshman Ashleah McDonald (Langley, British Columbia) ended the day with three saves for the Golden Flashes and earned her third shutout. She is now 11-5-1 overall. Smith ended the day with 10 saves for the Bobcats and dropped to 5-8-0 on the year.Â
