CONWAY, S.C. – Kent State (4-4) remained in control at the Chanticleer Classic as it took down host Coastal Carolina (6-3) by a score of 9-1 on Saturday afternoon.
"We really grinded it out," said Head Coach Jeff Duncan. "We were relentless all day and that was good to see. We had some really good performances."
The Golden Flashes grabbed an early lead with two runs in the first frame. Luke Burch led off the game with a double and Jacob Neuschaefer followed with a walk. Burch later scored on a groundout by Zarley Zalewski and Neuschaefer came around on an Alex Miklos base hit.
The Chanticleers scored in the 2nd when a walked batter made his way to home after a double and an error.
Kent State broke the game open with four-run 6th inning as they batted through the order. It started with Sawyer Polen getting hit by a pitch, a single from Zalewski and a two-RBI double by Miklos. Curtis Olvey then walked and the two were moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by Tim DalPorto. Burch eventually singled down the line to score both runners.
Three more runs were tacked on in the 8th as Jeff Revesz, Zach Beckner and Burch led off the inning with consecutive base hits to load the bases. A walk, hit batter and groundout allowed the runs to cross home plate.
Jared Skolnicki settled in to put together a strong start, as he went seven innings with four hits, one run, two walks and two strikeouts. Eli Martin and Tim Faix also had strong pitching performances in relief to close out the game, as neither faced the minimum number of batters in their time on the mound.
"I thought Jared Skolnicki pitched really well," Duncan said of his starter. "especially in a tight situation where they were starting to get a little energy and a little momentum."
The Flashes' offense stayed consistent up and down the order to collect 14 hits in the contest. Burch led the way with a 4-for-5 performance with a double out of the leadoff spot. Miklos was 3-for-5 also with a double and a team-high three RBI.
Kent State closes out the Chanticleer Classic on Sunday at 10 a.m. when it faces No. 25 Illinois.
