LAFAYETTE, La. – The Kent State men's golf team sits in a tie for eighth place after the first two rounds of the 30th Annual Louisiana Classics at Oakbourne Country Club. The Golden Flashes are 7-over with a 583 in the first tournament of the spring season, as rookie Ian Holt (Stow, Ohio) leads the team at 1-under par.
No. 1 ranked Illinois leads the field at 19-under, followed by Louisiana in second at 5-under, Texas State in third at 2-under and Middle Tennessee State in fourth with a 1-under.
The Golden Flashes are paired up with Mississippi State and Southeastern Louisiana tomorrow, and will tee off beginning at 7:30 a.m. Live scoring can be found on golfstat.com, and live video of holes 9 and 18 can be found on ragincajuns.com.
"We need to stay away from unforced errors and manage our game a little better," said Director of Golf/Head Men's Golf Coach Herb Page. "Even though it was our first tournament of the spring, I saw a lot of positive things from our players out on the course."
Holt, in a tie for 12th and just six strokes back of first-place finishes Payne Denman of MTSU and Thomas Detry of Illinois, carded a 1-under 143 this afternoon. After 18 holes he was 1-over par with one birdie, and had a solid second round where he birdied three of the first seven holes to be 4-under par. Holt went on to record three bogeys and three birdies to end the day 2-under.
Senior veteran Taylor Zoller (Charleston, S.C.) is two strokes back of Holt with a 1-over 145 to sit in a tie for 21st place. Zoller posted a team low-round of 72 in the first 18 holes and tallied a 73 in round two while combining for 10 birdies.
"I'm happy for the way Taylor played today," added Page. "If he keeps improving and playing well he will make our team a lot better."
In a tie for 35th, sophomore Josh Whalen (Napanee, Ontario) went 3-over 147 (73-74) and freshman Chase Johnson (Barberton, Ohio) is in 48th with a 5-over 149 (76-73). Freshman J.D. Hughes (Carlisle, Pa.) is just one stroke behind Johnson with a 6-over 150 for 55th place.
Junior Sebastian Bendsen (Denmark), competing as an individual, is tied for 59th at 7-over 151 (75-76).
