WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Tommy Monnot placed a pitch into the home bullpen in the 6th inning to give Kent State (10-9) a 4-3 victory at Purdue (9-14) Tuesday night.
"We found a way to get on top today," Head Coach Jeff Duncan said. "I would have liked to see a little bit better defense from us but overall, 12 hits on a really cold day with the wind blowing in – we did a really good job of staying in there and it's good to build some momentum."
Luke Burch led off the 3rd inning with a double and later scored on a single by Zarley Zalewski. The Boilermakers put up three in the 4th. Three base hits loaded the bases to start the inning and a hit batter tied the game at one. A sacrifice fly and an error allowed the other two runs to come home.
In the 6th, Conner Simonetti walked on four pitches and Tim DalPorto singled for his third time in the game. Monnot then came up with the big blast, sending the ball out of the yard in left field to put the Flashes back in front 4-3.
Eli Kraus went three innings in his first career start with two earned runs, five hits, one walk and three strikeouts. John Birkbeck followed with 1.1 innings, allowing just one hit. Tim Faix finished an inning, facing two batters and getting two outs, one via the strikeout.
Eli Martin continued a strong showing from the Kent State bullpen. He pitched the 6th and 7th innings with no hits, no walks and one strikeout. He faced the minimum six batters and only used twenty pitches, 15 of which were strikes.
Zach Willeman earned his third save of the season. He threw two innings with one hit and three strikeouts.
DalPorto had three of Kent State's 12 hits in four at-bats. Burch, Simonetti and Sawyer Polen all collected two.
The Golden Flashes will end their spring break road trip when they face No. 17 Illinois in a 4 p.m. EST game on Wednesday.
