STATE COLLEGE, Pa. – Kent State (14-11) entered Lubrano Park Wednesday night without a win on Medlar Field since April 1, 2009. Six years to the day, the Golden Flashes broke that drought with a 9-7 victory over Penn State (8-15).
The first batter of the game, Luke Burch, tripled and was soon joined on the bases after Zach Beckner was issued a walk. Sawyer Polen then reached on an error that allowed Burch to score the first run of the night. Zarley Zalewski followed with an RBI scud before a double-play ball made it a 3-0 game before the Nittany Lions would have a chance to bat.
The Golden Flashes tacked on another in the 2nd when Jeff Revesz singled and Burch singled him home.
Penn State got going after a leadoff walk came around on a sacrifice fly in the 3rd inning. The game became tied on a three-run Nittany Lion homerun in the 5th after an error and base hit started the frame.
After a Penn State reliever quieted the Kent State bats for a few innings, a new pitcher from the bullpen entered the game and the Golden Flashes' bats got back to action. They took the lead back in the 6th after Zalewski led off with a walk, Tommy Monnot doubled and Conner Simonetti plated both on another double.
The Nittany Lions brought the game within a run when a two-out walk stole a base and came home on a base hit.
However, the Golden Flashes added on some insurance runs in the 8th when Curtis Olvey led off with a double and came home on a Luca Fuscardo single and subsequent error. After Fuscardo stole second and moved to third on a groundout, he scored on a Beckner single to make it an 8-5 advantage. Another run in the 9th made it nine on the night.
Penn State threatened in the bottom of the final inning after an error and two-run homerun, but a double play ended the contest.
Skolnicki went 5.2 innings in the start with three hits, four earned runs, four walks and three strikeouts. Zach Spangler followed with 5.2 innings of work with two hits. Dan Kopcak threw a scoreless, hitless inning with one walk and one strikeout. Josh Pierce finished the job on the mound.
Eight out of nine batters scored a run in the game with Burch, Zalewski and Simonetti each having two. Simonetti led with two RBI.
Kent State resumes conference play this weekend when it travels to Northern Illinois for a three-game series.
