NILES, Ohio – Kent State (20-13) struggled to get its offense going Wednesday night, resulting in a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Youngstown State (10-21).
The pitching, on the other hand, remained strong as a combined effort of six Golden Flashes allowed just two earned runs while striking out ten in the contest.
The Penguins scored in the 7th on a single, error and two more base hits to decide the game.
Kent State did not register a hit until a Conner Simonetti single in the 4th. The team tried to rally in the 9th when Brad Hamilton smacked a double down the left field line with one out, but he was left on second to end the game. That was the fourth and final hit of the night for the Flashes.
Tim Faix did well in the start with 2.2 innings of one-hit, shutout baseball. He walked two while striking out four. Eli Martin also pitched 2.2 innings with one hit and four strikeouts. John Birkbeck suffered the loss in his 0.2 innings on the mound. Zach Spangler, Aaron Tadian and Chris Martin also appeared in relief.
Kent State will return to Mid-American Conference play this weekend when they host Ohio for a three-game series.
