OXFORD, Ohio – Eric Lauer threw his first career complete game shutout while Andy Ravel also excelled on the mound for Kent State (23-17, 11-7) in a doubleheader at Miami (9-31, 7-11) on Sunday. The Golden Flashes won the first game 1-0 and lost the final 2-0.
Lauer needed just 124 pitches to get through nine innings. He allowed just four hits and only walked one while striking out a career-high 12.
The offense scored a sole run in the first inning on a single by Sawyer Polen and RBI fielder's choice by Tommy Monnot to hand Lauer the win.
Ravel was handed the tough-luck loss in game two, as the Golden Flashes' bats were not able to give him any run support. The righty went six innings in the start with two runs, four hits, three walks and five strikeouts.
The game was scoreless until the 7th when Miami broke the tie with back-to-back solo homeruns to take Ravel out of the game.
Zach Willeman came on in relief to throw a scoreless, hitless frame with one strikeout. Dan Kopcak followed with 0.2 innings with no hits, two walks and one strikeout. Josh Pierce got the final out of the game on two pitches.
Kent State had six hits in the second game but could not bring a run across as they left seven runners on base. Zarley Zalewski and Luca Fuscardo both had two hits in the contest. Zalewski reached base in every at-bat as he also had a walk and was hit by a pitch.
The Golden Flashes will return home on Tuesday to host Oakland in a doubleheader. Both games will be seven-innings with the first starting at 3 p.m.
