CHARDON, Ohio- Freshman Ian Holt (Stow, Ohio) led the Kent State golf team with a second-place individual finish as the Golden Flashes finished sixth overall at the 2015 MAC Men's Golf Championship hosted at The Mayfield Sand Ridge Club.
Kent State shot 9-over-par 297 in the final round today and totaled a four-round score of 35-over. Miami captured the team title at 8-over, while Toledo garnered second at 15-over, and Eastern Michigan finished third at 22-over. For complete team and individual results, click here.
"It was a disappointing tournament," said Director of Golf/Head Men's Golf Coach Herb Page, whose Flashes entered the tournament as a six-time defending champion having won the event from 2009-2014. "We are a young team and I hope they realize what they have to work on and how much harder they have to work to get better to get back into the hunt in the Mid-American Conference. I hope they learned some good lessons this weekend and throughout this season. Despite the finish, I am proud of how the team never quit and they worked hard."
Holt, who was tied for fifth yesterday, moved up to second-place tie today after firing a 1-under-par 71. Holt was even through 12 holes, but bogeyed the 13th and 17th before closing with birdies at 14, 16 and 18. His even-par weekend included scores of 74-72-71-71. For his efforts, Holt earned a spot on the All-Tournament team.
After a bogey on holes nine and 10 dropped Chase Johnson to 2-over, the Barberton, Ohio native rallied with birdies at 12 and 15 to finish the round at even par. Earning 23rd overall, Johnson finished 11-over par with scores of 80-74-73-72. Junior Sebastian Bendsen (Vejen, Denmark) also finished in a share of 23rd place. Bendsen (74-73-75-77) was even through 11 holes this afternoon but three late bogeys and a double led to a final round at 5-over.
Rounding out the Kent State lineup was senior Taylor Zoller (Charleston, S.C.) in 32nd place and sophomore Josh Whalen (Napanee, Ontario) in 39th. Zoller (77-76-74-77) finished 16-over par and was 5-over on the day. Whalen (77-78-79-78) carded a 6-over today and was 24-over on the weekend.
Three Golden Flashes earned All-MAC accolades immediately following the tournament. Whalen garnered first team All-MAC honors, while Holt and Johnson were selected to the second team.
