COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Rookie goalkeeper Ashleah McDonald tallied four saves in her collegiate debut against the University of Maryland, but a first-half goal on a penalty kick gave the Terrapins a 1-0 victory at Ludgwig Field tonight. Â
"We are very proud of our effort tonight," said Head Coach Rob Marinaro. "We did a lot of positive things tonight that we will build on and move forward. We played very well defensively and our offense will come. We walked away disappointed in the result tonight but not in our performance."
Kent State had opportunities early, as sophomore Doni Capehart fired off the first shot three minutes into the game that missed wide. Three minutes later, junior Jenna Hellstrom put the ball on target, but Maryland goalkeeper Rachelle Beanlands turned the shot away.Â
Maryland 's first shot on goal was the game-winner, which came 15 minutes into the contest. Maryland's Alex Anthony put one past McDonald to give the Terrapins a 1-0 lead, which would eventually win the game. Anthony had a game-high nine shots, including three on goal, in her 79 minutes of play.
Kent State continued its attack, and tried to tally the equalizer two minutes before halftime. Sophomore Hayden Pascoe got the ball to Capehart who nailed a shot just up and over the bar.Â
Maryland had a 7-5 advantage in shots, including a 3-1 edge in shots on goal, and led 3-1 in corner kicks after the first 45 minutes.
The Terrapins picked up their intensity in the second half and outshot the Golden Flashes 9-0 for a 16-5 overall advantage for the game.  Maryland also led 8-1 in corner kicks by the end of the night.
Hellstrom led the Kent State offense with three shots, including the lone shot on goal, while Pascoe and Capehart added one apiece.
McDonald earned the loss between the pipes for the Golden Flashes, while Beanlands tallied her first shutout victory of the season with one save.
Kent State will be back in action at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 23 when it takes on Bryant University at Zoeller Field.Â
