Kent State opened up the season with a thrilling double overtime victory at Murphy-Mellis field on Saturday, beating VCU 4-3. The win was the 100th of Head Coach Kathleen Wiler's career.
The Golden Flashes started off a little slow, as they were outshot 14-4 in the opening 35 minutes. The Rams scored with four minutes remaining in the first half to take a 1-0 lead at the break.
From then on, Kent State got back in control. At the beginning of the second half, Jamie Fries scored her first career goal to tie the game. The Golden Flashes earned a corner and Susanne Felder had a sweep on goal with Fries standing by to put the deflection into the back of the net.
The lead was short-lived, as the Rams scored shortly after to tie the game 2-2. Kent State got back in front at 41:34 when Ines Delpech fed the ball in to Alison Harmatz who connected her shot from the right side. Krysti Lober gave the Flashes the lead with five minutes left in regulation when she gained possession, dribbled in from the right and fired a shot in for the score.
However, VCU was able to score off a deflection on their own end with just a few minutes remaining to even the game at three and send it into overtime.
With no one scoring in the first 15-minute extra period, the teams played into double overtime. Madison Thompson connected on the game-winner to give the Flashes the victory.
Kent State went on to outshoot VCU 29-19 in the contest, including a 20-4 advantage in the second half and 5-1 in both overtime periods. Ines Delpech led the way with seven shots while Lober had six.
Andrea Rinehart played the whole game in net, finishing with eight saves, all coming in the opening half, and included a great denial on a Rams' breakaway opportunity.
The Golden Flashes will travel next weekend to Michigan State to play Old Dominion on Saturday and the host Spartans on Sunday. Both matches are set to begin at 3 p.m.
