SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Kent State concluded its trip to the West Coast by splitting a pair of matches at the Sacramento State Invitational on Saturday afternoon. The Golden Flashes lost its first match of the day to host Sacramento State, 3-1 (29-27, 22-25, 19-25, 13-25), and bounced back to defeat Nevada, 3-1 (22-25, 25-20, 27-25, 25-21), to finish the non-conference schedule with a 6-6 record.
Sophomore Kelsey Bittinger was named to the all-tournament team after posting 48 kills (4.36 per set), a .342 hitting percentage and 18 digs (1.64 per set) over the three matches.
After the middles carried the load for Kent State's offense in Friday's match against Santa Clara, Bittinger was the catalyst on Saturday. The outside hitter put together back-to-back 20-kill performances and a .375 hitting percentage for the day. Senior Bridget Wilhelm picked up where she left off on Friday and posted 21 kills while hitting .474. Freshman Amy Kober added a career-high 10 kills against Sacramento State. Junior Katarina Kojic finished the day with 96 assists, 14 digs, 6 kills and 5 aces.
Sophomore Challen Geraghty led the defense with 36 digs. Freshman Sam Jones added 21 digs. Senior Kelly Hutchison and junior Drew Norberg recorded seven blocks apiece to lead the Flashes.
Kent State opens Mid-American Conference play next weekend when its hosts Miami and Bowling Green at the M.A.C. Center on Friday, Sept. 25 and Saturday, Sept. 26.
