KENT, Ohio –The Kent State women's soccer team begins Mid-American Conference action this weekend as it travels to Akron for a 7 p.m. game on Friday, Sept. 25 and Buffalo for a noon game on Sunday, Sept. 27.
The Golden Flashes are coming off a 2-1 overtime victory over Eastern Kentucky last Friday night to improve to 4-2-2 on the year. Sophomore Karli Paracca (Valencia, Pa.) scored the game-winner in the 91st minute and earned Mid-American Conference Offensive Player of the Week honors.
Junior Jenna Hellstrom (Sudbury, Ontario) tallied her sixth goal of the season against Eastern Kentucky to even the score at 1-1 in the 33rd minute. She leads the Golden Flashes in scoring with 18 points on six goals and six assists. Hellstrom also leads the MAC in most offensive categories such as shots, points, points-per-game, goals, goals-per-game, game-winning goals and assists.
Hellstrom's offense also ranks in the Top-10 nationally, ranking seventh in assists per game (0.75), eighth in points-per-game (2.25) and ninth in total assists (6).
Freshman Ashleah McDonald (Langley, B.C.) has seen the most action in goal for the Golden Flashes and has a 4-1-1 record. In 544 minutes, she has allowed just four goals, has 30 saves and one shutout. Her goals against average (0.66) leads the MAC, as well as her .882 save percentage.
Kent State and Akron (3-4-1) will be meeting for the 15th time, as the Golden Flashes own an 11-3-0 all-time record. Kent State has been victorious in the last four meetings. Akron is coming off four consecutive losses to Cornell, Pittsburgh, Lipscomb and UT Martin.
On Sunday, the Golden Flashes and Buffalo (4-3-1) will meet for the 19th time, as Kent State holds a narrow 9-8-1 lead in the all-time series. Buffalo defeated the Flashes' last year, 2-0, in Kent. Buffalo is coming off a 1-0 loss to West Virginia.
