AKRON, Ohio- The Kent State women's soccer team garnered its fourth consecutive win and secured the first Wagon Wheel point of the year after a 3-1 victory over Akron (3-5-1, 0-1-0 MAC) on Friday night.
"I am very happy with our performance today," said Head Coach Rob Marinaro. "Akron is well organized and a well-coached team. We showed a lot of character to get a hard fought win on the road for our first conference win."
The Golden Flashes (5-2-2, 1-0-0 MAC) found themselves down 1-0 just 16 minutes into the game after Akron's Karin Norman got a rebound and put one past rookie goalkeeper Ashleah McDonald (Langley, B.C.).
It didn't take long for Kent State to answer, as junior Jenna Hellstrom (Sudbury, Ontario) tallied her seventh goal of the season at the 20:19 mark. Sophomore Hayden Pascoe (Belle Vernon, Pa.) fired off a shot at Akron goalkeeper Klaire Adee, who made the save, but Hellstrom was there to put in the rebound to even the score, 1-1.
The Golden Flashes had a lot of chances in the first period, out-shooting the Zips 18-6 and boasted a 4-0 lead in corner kicks. After the half, Kent State was able to tack on two more goals with the help of redshirt sophomore Donavan Capehart (Orient, Ohio).
Capehart tallied her third goal of the year at the 56:09 mark after she collected a pass that was deflected in the box and put one past Adee to give Kent State a 2-1 lead. Just five minutes later, Capehart sealed the win for the Flashes' after heading in a corner kick taken by sophomore Kristen Brots (Naperville, Ill.).
Kent State out-shot Akron 23-13 and had a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks. McDonald earned the win in goal after making five saves to improve to 5-1-1 on the year. Akron goalie, Adee, picked up three saves and received the loss to move to 0-1-0.
Kent State will now travel to Buffalo for a noon game on Sunday, Sept. 27.
