Kent State's gymnastics team heads to Logan, Utah for a meeting with the Utah State Aggies on Friday, January 15th. The competition is slated to start at 9pm Eastern Time / 7pm Mountain Time.
The last time out, the Golden Flashes defeated Temple in the season and home opener 195.150-188.450 in the Memorial Athletic and Convocation Center on Sunday, January 10th. Kent State won all four events with Rachel Stypinski scoring a 9.9 on both the bars and floor to take those two events, as freshman Dara Williams and Sarah Lippowitsch won their first events with scores of 9.850 and 9.875, respectively. In the Rankings
Following the first competition for Kent State, the Flashes jumped to No. 16 in the nation, in the RoadtoNationals.com National Rankings. The Aggies enter the meet just outside the top-25 coming in at No. 26 in the nation.
The Series
This will be the first time the two teams meet in the regular season. Kent State holds the 1-0 record (since 1981) over the Aggies with only meeting once before in the 2005 NCAA Postseason Tournament in Tuscaloosa, Ala. The Flashes defeated Utah State 192.500 to 192.375.
Scouting the Aggies
Utah State enters the meet with a 1-0 record as they took down Centenary College on Friday, January 8th, 194.375 to 184.225. McKinzey Martinez became the first Aggie since 2007 to win three titles in the same meet. Matrinez won the vault (9.750), bars (9.850) and floor (9.775) in the victory over Centenary. Martinez went on to capture the all-around title with a score of 39.130. Utah State completed the sweep of titles during their meet with Centenary, as Melanie Oster won the beam title with a score of 9.825.
