KENT, Ohio- Kent State soccer suffered their first conference loss of the season on Sunday, falling 2-1 to Ball State in overtime from Dix Stadium. Sam Kambol scored the game-winner for the Cardinals as the Golden Flashes are now 11-2-2 (7-1-2 MAC) this season, while Ball State moves to 13-3-2 (8-1-1 MAC).
Scoring opportunities were limited in the first half, with each team registering five shots in the first 45 minutes of play. Ashleah McDonald stopped the only Ball State shot on goal in the period as the teams went into halftime with the score tied 0-0.
The Golden Flashes put pressure on the Cardinals early in the second half, leading to the first goal of the match in the 53rd minute. Abbie Lawson got wide and crossed the ball into the box where Donavan Capehart was able to get a head on the ball but the shot was deflected by the Ball State keeper. The rebound went to Jenna Hellstrom who headed the ball into the net for her 13th goal of the season. Capehart picked up her third assist of the season on the play.
McDonald would come up with three saves over the next 20 minutes as Ball State amped up their attack. The Cardinals would tie the game in the 77th minute, however, as a deflected ball made its way to Kelsey Wendlandt who fired a shot from outside the 18-yard box into the upper corner of the net.
Neither team would get another good look at goal for the remainder of regulation, sending the match into overtime.
Kent State nearly ended the match on a Hellstrom free kick early in the first overtime period but a goalie interference call would negate the free-kick goal by Hellstrom.
The game-winner for Ball State would come in the 97th minute as Sam Kabol drove down the right sideline and into the Kent State box, getting off a shot that went into the corner of the net.
Kent State had the advantage in corner kicks (4-1), while Ball State had the advantage in shots (19-11).
With a Miami loss to Ohio and a Central Michigan tie with Buffalo on Sunday, the Golden Flashes clinched the outright regular season MAC East Division Championship and at least a number two seed in the MAC Tournament.
The Golden Flashes conclude the regular season on Thursday, Oct. 27 as they travel to Athens, Ohio to take on the Ohio Bobcats at 3 p.m.
