Fans Get Early Glimpse at Blue & Gold Wrestle-Offs

Five weight classes were in action Thursday night during Blue & Gold Wrestle-Offs at the M.A.C. Center.
In the highest scoring match of the night junior Stephen Suglio topped redshirt freshman Caleb Stockmaster 10-6 to secure an early season starting lineup spot at 197. Stcokmaster grabbed the opening takedown, before Suglio took control of the match and built a 7-2 lead after two periods.  Stockmaster closed the gap to 8-6 with a two-point turn and a takedown in the third, before running out of time.
The other two starting spots in question heading into Thursday night according to Head Coach Jim Andrassy were 165 and 184.
Junior Jerald Spohn recorded a second period pin of Jack Harris at 184. Spohn, who held the starting spot at 184 two years ago, took control early with a pair of first period takedowns.
At 165 pounds, sophomore Isaac Bast went 2-0 in a round robin. Bast grabbed a first period takedown and never looked back in a 6-2 victory over freshman Shawn Livingston.
Bast finished his night with a 5-1 victory over redshirt freshman Jared Walker.  In-between Bast's matches, Walker topped Livingston 7-5. Walker battled back from a 4-0 deficit.
Sophomore Casey Sparkman also went 2-0, competing in a round robin at 157. Sparkman ended the night with a first period pin of redshirt freshman Jacob Spino in 36 seconds. In his first bout, Sparkman put together a four-point move in the first period in an 8-3 victory over freshman Richard Jackson. Â
Spino got the lone takedown in a 4-1 victory over Jackson.
At 174, sophomore Jairod James pulled away late in the period and defeated freshman Lane Hinkle 9-5.
The Golden Flashes open their season Sunday, Nov. 6 at the Clarion Open.
