Kent State junior Nick Holley was named Mid-American Conference East Division Offensive Player of the Week on Monday, following his collegiate debut at quarterback against Akron this past Saturday.
Playing quarterback for the first time since his senior year of high school in 2012, Holley completed 19 passes for 285 yards and two touchdowns. He also rushed for 117 yards and a touchdown, making him the first Kent State player with 400 yards of total offense (402) in a game since 2004 (Josh Cribbs).
Used in various roles since his freshman year of 2013, Holley had seen significant time at both running back and wide receiver. He also played on several special teams units and served as the Golden Flashes' punt returner in the first four games of 2016. Injuries to both Justin Agner and Mylik Mitchell sparked the idea of moving Holley to quarterback following the Alabama game.
Also honored as Kent State's Hometown Bank Student-Athlete of the Week, Holley was the first Kent State player since Julian Edelman in 2008 to rush for 100 yards and pass for 100 yards in the same game. He was the first Kent State player to rush for over 100 yards in a game since September of 2015. Holley's 285 yards passing were the most in a game by a Kent State player since 2014.
The Flashes will play their second of eight straight conference games Saturday, Oct. 8 at Buffalo.
