Hellstrom Breaks School Goals Record; Flashes Shutout Akron 4-0 to Earn Wagon Wheel Point

AKRON, Ohio- Donavan Capehart and Jenna Hellstrom netted two goals apiece as Kent State downed Akron 4-0 Thursday evening at Cub Cadet Field to earn their ninth straight win and point for Kent State in the Crystal Clinic Wagon Wheel Challenge. Hellstrom now has 32 career goals, a new Kent State record. With the win, the Golden Flashes move to 9-1-0 (5-0 MAC) while the Zips fall to 3-8-2 (0-3-2 MAC).
The Golden Flashes came out with a relentless offensive attack, controlling possession in Akron territory for a majority of the first half.
A little game of give-and-go offense between Donavan Capehart and Jenna Hellstrom resulted in Capehart's fourth goal in as many games. Capehart first popped the ball up to Hellstrom who drove to the end line and played the ball to a crashing Capehart who put it in the net from inside the six-yard box.
A minute later, Karli Paracca found space, creating a one on one with goalkeeper Annabelle Hegeman but Hegeman came up with the save.
Capehart got another good look at goal in the 13th minute following a Maisano cross in to Capehart whose flick-on went over the goalie's outstretched arm but off the crossbar.
Kent State notched their second goal in the 27th minute as Hellstrom got the ball on the left side of the 18-yard box and played another cross into Capehart who beat the keeper with a header. Capehart now has five multiple-goal games in her career.
Hellstrom got in on the scoring in the 47th minute, curling a corner kick over the keeper into the corner of the net.
Katie Kingsbury who replaced Ashleah McDonald in goal in the second and came up with a great save in the in the 49th minute on a shot from outside the box by Akron's
Hellstrom's record-breaking goal came just twelve minutes after her first goal as Hayden Pascoe played the ball to a streaking Hellstrom down the left side of the Akron box who put a shot on goal that went through the hands of Hegeman.
With her two assists, Hellstrom also set a new Kent State record for multiple-assist games with four.
The Golden Flashes would preserve the 4-0 lead for the remainder of the game, earning their fourth shutout of the season.
Ashleah McDonald is credited with win as she improves to 9-1-0 this season.
The Golden Flashes return to action Sunday as they take on Buffalo at 1 p.m. from inside Dix Stadium.
