KENT, Ohio- Kent State soccer earned a hard-fought, 1-0 victory over the Buffalo Bulls on Sunday afternoon from Dix Stadium. The Golden Flashes' 10th straight victory ties the longest win-streak in program history and improves their record to 10-1-0 (6-0-0 MAC), while the Bulls fall to 6-6-2 (3-3-0 MAC).
A fast start by the Golden Flashes led to the only goal of the match by Jenna Hellstrom just 15 minutes into the contest. Kristen Brots played the ball to Hellstrom just outside the 18-yard box where Hellstrom created space from the Buffalo defender and curled a brilliant shot over the Bulls' keeper and into the corner of the net. The goal marks Hellstrom's 10th of the season and gives Brots her first assist of the year.
Buffalo would get their chances in the first half as they totaled four shots on goal in the first 45 minutes. Sophomore keeper Katie Kingsbury, who made her first start of the season, was up for the challenge stopping all four shots, giving the Golden Flashes a 1-0 lead at halftime.
The Kent State defense would prevail in the second half, stifling a Buffalo attack that controlled possession for a majority of the second half.
Kingsbury came up with a great save in the 55th minute, tipping the ball over the crossbar following a hard shot by Buffalo's Carissima Cutrona.
The Golden Flashes nearly added another goal late in the match as Hellstrom got loose, creating a one on one with Buffalo's Laura Dougall but Dougall would come up with the save.
Kent State's defense would preserve the 1-0 lead, not allowing the Bulls to get a shot on goal in the final 14 minutes of the match. Kingsbury stopped all seven of Buffalo's shots on goal in the match, as she earned her first career win and shutout. The Flashes now have four shutouts in their last five matches.
Up next, the Golden Flashes head north to take on Central Michigan on Oct. 14, followed by a match at Eastern Michigan on Oct. 16.
