WASHINGTON, D.C. – Kent State (14-7) saw its season come to an end on Wednesday as the team fell 2-1 at No. 19 American (14-6) in the play-in game for the NCAA Tournament.
"We are really proud of the way team 42 fought today," said Head Coach Kathleen Wiler. "They are a special group. Thank you to the seniors for setting the standard every day."
Ines Delpech got the scoring started as she drilled home a shot on a corner play. Silvia Figa Malgosa and Jessica Nesbitt earned assists on the play that occurred at the 20:22 mark.
The 1-0 lead stood through halftime until American answered 16 minutes into the second half on a corner of their own. The Eagles took the lead after being awarded numerous penalty corners in the final twenty minutes of the game. With 2:15 left on the clock, they connected for the game-winner.
American had an 11-4 advantage in shots and 11-2 in penalty corners.
At 14-7, Kent State posted its most wins in a season since 2010. The senior class of Krysti Lober, Alexis Madeira, Andrea Rinehart and Madison Thompson will go down as one of the winningest classes in program history as they won a MAC regular season title every season, three-straight tournament championships and the only NCAA win in program history.
