Since 2009, Kent State has named its Team MVP in honor of Lieutenant Jack Rittichier, one of the most celebrated heroes in the history of the United States Coast Guard. This past Friday, the 2015 honor went to linebacker Matt Dellinger (Clarkston, Mich.).
Following a morning practice, Kent State's football team gathered in the South Plaza of Dix Stadium around the Rittichier Monument. Prior to Head Coach Paul Haynes announcing Dellinger as the winner, the team was addressed by a pair of special guests.
Rittichier's Kent State teammate Allan Kaupinen talked to the current Golden Flashes about the 1954 Refrigerator Bowl team. Retired Coast Guard Lieutenant Commander Jim Loomis then spoke of Rittichier's selfless efforts in the military.
"Jack Rittichier has a heroic story and we are very fortunate to have people like Allan and Jim come to our campus and share it with our student-athletes" Director of Athletics Joel Nielsen said. "They have both put a great deal of time and effort into preserving Jack's legacy and we can't thank them enough for all of their support."
This past season, Dellinger earned all-conference honors and was named a MAC Distinguished Scholar-Athlete. He finished his career with 273 tackles. Dellinger recently decided to forego a football Pro Day opportunity to pursue a career in the military.
Last year, sculptor Ann Rozhon created a bronze sculpture, based on a famous photo from Rittichier's 90-yard touchdown run against Bowling Green, using 3D technology. A larger version of the sculpture sits in the football office, while smaller versions are given to each Rittichier Award winner.
The Golden Flashes conclude their 2016 spring season Friday, March 18.
