Flashes in Florida for Valspar Collegiate Invitational

The Kent State men's golf team will take part in the Valspar Collegiate Invitational March 21-22, at the Floridian National Golf Club in Palm City, Fla. The two-day tournament features a par-71, 7,114-yard course and begins with 36 holes Monday, concluding with 18 holes on Tuesday. The University of Houston will serve as the tournament host. The Competition
The 15-team field at this year's Valspar Collegiate Invitational features four Top 10 teams and 10 squads ranked in the Top 25 according to Golfstat. The field includes: No. 3 Illinois, No. 5 Florida State, No. 7 Florida, No. 8 Texas, No. 11 Clemson, No. 13 Oklahoma State, No. 17 South Florida, No. 18 South Carolina, No. 22 LSU, No. 23 Arkansas, No. 29 Texas A & M, No. 36 Houston, No. 38 Memphis, No. 45 Georgia Tech and No. 48 Kent State.
Last Time Out
The Golden Flashes finished third in a strong field of 15 teams at the General Hackler Championships March 12-13, with a 12-under 852. In the final round, Kent State led the field with a 9-under 279.
Sophomore Chase Johnson (Barberton, Ohio) shot a six-under 66 in the final round to put four Golden Flashes in the top 22 spots.
Freshman Gisli Sveinbergsson (Hafnarfjordur, Iceland) led the way with 6-under for tournament. His fourth place finish earned him Mid-American Conference Golfer of the Week honors.
Junior Josh Whalen (Napanee, Ontario) finished tied for seventh with a 4-under 212 and sophomore Ian Holt (Stow, Ohio) came in 15th place at 1-under.
Last Season
At last year's Valspar Collegiate Invitational, Kent State finished in 11th place, shooting a 27-over 879. Florida was the 2015 champion with a 17-under 835. Chase Johnson finished in 20th place with an even par 213. Holt and Whalen finished in the Top 60.
Up Next
The Golden Flashes will head to College Station, Texas to compete in the Aggie Invitational April 2-3.
