
Gymnastics Set to Compete in NCAA Iowa City Regional

The Kent State gymnastics team heads to the University of Iowa this weekend to compete in the 2016 NCAA Gymnastics Iowa City Regional. The action from Carver-Hawkeye Arena kicks off at 4:00pm CT/ 5:00pm ET on Saturday, April 2nd.

The Golden Flashes who finished 30th in the country in terms of regional qualifying score (195.595), are one of six teams set compete in the Iowa City Regional. The other five teams in attendance will be #1 Oklahoma, #12 Nebraska, #13 Arkansas, #19 Iowa, and #35 Central Michigan.
Kent State's last regional appearance as a team was in 2014, when they took part in the NCAA Central Regional in Baton Rouge, La., where they finished 4th.
Last season, sophomore Rachel Stypinski represented the Flashes at the Columbus Regional, finishing tied for 2nd on floor with a 9.9 and tied for 13th on beam with a 9.8.
The Golden Flashes last competed on March 19th, taking 5th place in the MAC Championships hosted by Ball State.
Kent turned in team scores of 48.725 (vault), 48.525 (bars), 48.700 (beam), and 49.375 (floor), bringing their total score to 195.325.
Jordan Hardison was the top overall finisher for the Golden Flashes, taking 2nd on floor with a 9.925, followed by Samantha Gordon and Skyelee Lamano in a tie for 3rd at 9.9.
During the post-meet ceremonies, Stypinski was honored with the MAC Gymnast of the Year award, as she finished with the top RQS on floor (9.890) and beam (9.870) in the conference. Head Coach Brice Biggin was named MAC Coach of the Year, as the Golden Flashes were crowned MAC Regular season champions, going 6-0 against conference opponents.

The top-2 teams plus individual event winners (if not on a top-2 team) will qualify for the NCAA Championships, scheduled for April 15-17 in Forth Worth, Texas.
