Flip for the Cure: Golden Flashes Clinch Regular Season MAC Title

KENT, Ohio โ The Kent State gymnastics team came from behind to defeat Eastern Michigan and clinch the Mid-American Conference regular season title in their annual Flip for the Cure meet on Friday, March 4th.ย The Golden Flashes who trailed Eastern Michigan after three rotations, finished with a final score of 195.025, while the Eagles finished with a score of 194.025.
"They kept fighting for every tenth on beam and floor and for them not to give up and to stay focused on what they needed to do, I couldn't be more proud of them," said Head Gymnastics Coach Brice Biggin.
Kent State posted scores of 48.675 (vault), 48.100 (bars), 49.000 (beam), and 49.250 (floor), bringing their final score to 195.025.
The Golden Flashes started the night off on vault, led by senior Nicolle Eastman's 9.8, tying for first place with Kendall Valentin of Eastern Michigan.ย Behind Eastman in a tie for fourth place was Brooke Timko and Dara Williams, each scoring a 9.75.ย
In the second rotation of the night, the Golden Flashes took to the uneven bars, where Rachel Stypinski scored a 9.875, tying for first place.ย Brooke Timko followed up her 9.75 on vault with a 9.775 on bars, good enough for third place. ย Skyelee Lamano finished in a tie for sixth with a score of 9.725.ย Competing as an exhibitionist, senior Rebecca Osmer scored a 9.8.ย
On the balance beam, Rachel Stypinski exploded for 9.95, a career-high score, which puts her in a tie with Jenny Eckelย for fifth in Kent State history.ย Ali Marrero turned in a solid performance, tying her career-high of 9.85 and earning third place.ย Nicolle Eastman continued her strongย efforts on the night with a 9.75, tying for fourth place.ย Milena Fabry and Brooke Timko each turned in a 9.725, tying for sixth.
Down by 0.7 points heading to the floor exercise, Michaela Romito led off for the Golden Flashes with a 9.7, followed by Samantha Gordon with a 9.8 and Nicolle Eastman with a 9.775.ย Skyelee Lamano and Jordan Hardison finished in a tie for second second, each scoring a 9.875.ย Rachel Stypinski rounded out the Golden Flash floor exercise with a 9.925, taking first place.
Eastern Michigan finished with scores of 48.725 (vault), 48.800 (bars), 47.550 (beam), and 48.950 (floor).
Catie Conrad was the lone all-around competitor on the night, posting scores of 9.725 (vault), 9.750 (bars), 9.875 (beam), and 9.750 (floor), for a total of 39.100.
The Golden Flashes have a short turn-around as they host Cornell for Senior Day this Sunday, March 6th at 1 p.m. in the M.A.C. Center.ย
