CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Kent State (6-3) posted another all-around good effort on Saturday to win 11-6 at Charlotte (5-5).
"Andy Ravel was good today," said Head Coach Jeff Duncan. "He made good pitches when he needed to get out of jams. He is very competitive and resilient. Offensively we were very opportunistic and very disciplined taking our walks and getting key hits. We were led by Josh Hollander - as a freshman he has been doing a really good job for us defensively and offensively. He drove in two runs today in big situations. It was good to see Zarley Zalewski drive in a couple of runs today on a homerun. We played good defense for the most part; we struggled in the 8th by kept Charlotte from having a big inning, which they have been known for. Chris Martin and Tim Faix did a good job minimizing the damage."
The Golden Flashes took advantage in the 2nd inning to grab an early lead. With two outs in the frame, walks were issued to Zach Beckner and Tim DalPorto. Josh Hollander then singled up the middle to plate the first run. Luke Burch followed with a RBI base hit of his own. After another walk to load the bases, a throwing error with Miklos at the bases allowed everyone to advance and two runs to come home, making it a four-run inning.
Kent State struck again with three runs in the 4th. The inning began with a walk to DalPorto and a Josh Hollander double to left. Burch then made the bases loaded with a four-pitch walk. Free bases continued to be a problem for the 49ers as Jacob Neuschaefer got an easy RBI on another walk. Miklos made something happen again as a fielder's choice ended up allowing two runs to come in, thanks in part to another Charlotte error.
The 49ers put runners on the corners in the bottom of the 4th, but Andy Ravel remained untouched as he struck out the final batter of the inning on three pitches.
A two-out, two-run dinger to left center by Zarley Zalewski opened the score up to 9-0 in the 6th.
Charlotte was unable to post a run on the board until a walk and double down the line scored one in the bottom of the 6th. A triple right after scored another. The inning ended with two groundouts, the first scoring a run to make it a 9-3 contest.
The home team added on three more runs in the 8th, but could not come any closer as the Flashes weren't done yet. In the final frame, Conner Simonetti and Dom Iero both walked and then were advanced on a sacrifice bunt by DalPorto. Hollander singled them both in to make it an 11-6 ball game.
Ravel posted another good start, going 6.0 innings with three runs, seven hits, two walks and two strikeouts. Patrick Dayton followed with three unearned runs, two hits and one strikeout in 1.0 inning of work. Chris Martin went 0.1 with a walk and Tim Faix finished the game, throwing 1.2 innings with one hit and one walk.
Hollander went 3-for-5 at the plate with a double, two runs and two RBI. Kent State's other seven hits were scattered throughout the order.
The final game at Charlotte is slated to begin Sunday at 1 p.m.
