Long Ball Leads KSU to 5-2 Win Against YSU

KENT, Ohio – Two homeruns proved to be the difference makers Wednesday night as Kent State (23-10) completed its nine-game home stand with a 5-2 victory over Youngstown State (6-19).

After the Penguins went up 2-0 in the 1^st, the Golden Flashes answered with a run in the 4^th when Zarley Zalewski doubled and came home on a base hit by Dom Iero. In the 6^th, Dylan Rosa smacked a no-doubter over the wall in left field to tie the game at two.

A three-run 7th inning by Kent State gave the home team the lead for good. The frame started with a single by Reilly Hawkins. Zalewski then came up with another big hit as he homered to right field to put the Flashes in front 4-2. The final run was tallied when Rosa walked and was driven home on a double down the right field line off the bat of Conner Simonetti.

Connor Wollersheim allowed just one earned run in the start as he went 5.0 innings with three hits, four walks and four strikeouts. Eli Martin was sharp in relief following Wollersheim, striking out three while allowing just one hit in 1.1 innings. Patrick Dayton earned the first win of his career while Zach Spangler earned his second save. John Schreiber and Aaron Tadian also appeared on the mound as the bullpen combined for a two-hit shutout in the final four frames.

Every player in the starting lineup recorded a hit, the third time that has happened in the past seven games. Zalewski's two extra-base hits led the way as he added in two runs and two RBI. Hawkins also was 2-for-4 on the night.

Kent State will travel to Eastern Michigan next for a three-game conference series beginning Friday at 6 p.m.
