Kent State Completes Second-Straight MAC Series Sweep

ATHENS, Ohio – Kent State (30-10, 12-3) took down Ohio (17-22, 5-10) 6-5 on Sunday to complete its second-straight conference sweep and its fifth series sweep of the season.
The team added room to its first place lead in the conference as contender Ball State lost on Sunday and Miami completed a non-conference series.
Pete Schuler hit a solo homerun, his second career dinger in as many days, to put the Flashes up 1-0 in the 2nd. In the 3rd the Golden Flashes added another tally when Luke Burch and Mason Mamarella singled, a wild pitch moved them over, then another wild pitch allowed Burch to scamper home.
The biggest frame was in the 5th as three runs came home. Burch started things once again with a single and Zarley Zalewski walked to put two on. Dylan Rosa followed with his 11th homerun of the year to put the team up 5-0.
A few singles and an error allowed Ohio to score for the first time on the weekend with two runs in the 6th. In the 7th, the Bobcats tied the game on a walk, single, walk, passed ball and a two-run double.
The Golden Flashes quickly answered to take the lead back as Conner Simonetti walked, Alex Miklos bunted him over and Dom Iero singled him home to give Kent State the 6-5 victory.
Eli Kraus went 6.0 innings in the start with two earned runs, six hits, two walks and four strikeouts. Zach Spangler was awarded the win after 1.0 inning with one earned run, two hits and a walk. Zach Willeman picked up his 10th save of the season by throwing the final 2.0 frames with one hit, one walk and two strikeouts.
Burch had another big day at the plate as he went 3-for-5 with two runs and two stolen bases. Mamarella and Schuler both finished with two hits each.
Kent State will now travel to Penn State on Wednesday for a 6:30 p.m. game before returning home to host Miami next weekend.
