KENT, Ohio – The Kent State (19-8, 4-2) bats broke out for 13 runs on 19 hits Sunday to win the series against Western Michigan (8-17, 1-2) in a 13-2 game.
The Golden Flashes scored first in the opening inning when Zarley Zalewski and Dylan Rosa hit back-to-back doubles. In the 2nd they plated another as Pete Schuler led off with a walk then eventually made it home when a fellow base runner was caught in a rundown.
The big blow of the game came in an eight-run 4th inning. The Broncos got on the board in the top of the inning on a single and double before the Flashes quickly answered. A single and two walks loaded the bases with some fielder's choices in between, as all the damage of the frame came with two outs. Sam Hurt got things started by slapping a base hit to center field to score two. After a pitching change, Mason Mamarella followed with a base hit to left to score another. The bases were loaded back up once Luke Burch walked during the next at-bat. Zach Beckner then hit a RBI single before Zalewski also singled to score two more. Rosa then singled one home before Pete Schuler also did to make it a 10-1 game through four innings.
Two more runs came on base hits by Burch, Zalewski and Schuler in the 6th. Western Michigan plated their second run in the 7th on a solo homerun, but Brad Hamilton hit one out himself, also a solo shot, in the 8th to make the game a 13-2 final.
Eli Kraus continued to slay the competition as he earned his fifth win of the season in the start. He went 6.2 innings with two runs, six hits, two walks and one strikeout. John Schreiber filled in 1.1 innings with two hits and one strikeout. Aaron Tadian threw the final scoreless frame as he faced the minimum on 13 pitches in the performance.
Every starter recorded a hit in the contest, led by a 4-for-5 day by Zalewski. He added in two RBI and three runs scored. Burch went 3-for-4 with a walk and two runs out of the leadoff spot. Rosa, Schuler, Hamilton, Simonetti and Hurt all added in two hits each.
The home stand will continue for the Golden Flashes on Tuesday when they face Ohio State at 6 p.m. More details to come on kentstatesports.com.
