KENT, Ohio – You can't pitch much better than Eric Lauer did Friday afternoon. The junior two-hit Toledo (6-24-1, 2-5) in his second career complete game while striking out ten and not giving away one free base, leading the way for Kent State (21-9, 5-2) to take game one against the Rockets 3-0.
The two hits given up, a single to left field in the 2nd and first-pitch double to left in the 5th, were the only base runners that Toledo would have in the game. Lauer needed just 106 pitches in the effort with an impressive 75 of them being strikes.
The Golden Flashes supplied the run support with a run in the 2nd, 4th and 6th innings. Pete Schuler led off the 2nd with a single before Mason Mamarella doubled down the right field line to put two in scoring position. A sacrifice fly from Luke Burch brought Schuler home easily. In the 4th, Mamarella started things off with a base hit and came around on a Zach Beckner double. The final run came by way of Sam Hurt, as he singled, stole second, advanced on a bunt single by Mamarella then came home on another sacrifice by Burch.
Kent State had ten hits on the day but left ten on base. Mamarella had a 3-for-4 performance in the game while Burch and Zarley Zalewski both had two hits each.
Saturday's game against Toledo has been postponed due to impending weather. The two teams will finish the series in a double header on Sunday at a time and location still to be determined. Follow @KentStBaseball on Twitter for all the latest updates and information.
