COLUMBUS - Kent State sits in a tie for fifth place following round one of the 46th Robert Kepler Intercollegiate Saturday on Ohio State's Scarlet Course. On their most challenging weather day of the season, the Golden Flashes shot a 15-over 299. UNLV leads the pack of 16 teams with a 5-over 299.
Sophomore Chase Johnson (Barberton, Ohio) is on pace for his second straight top 10 finish. Johnson's 2-over 73 has him in a tie for ninth place to lead the Flashes. He is just three strokes behind co-leaders Taylor Eyster (UAB) and Shintaro Ban (UNLV), who are 1-under.
Originally scheduled as a 54-hole tournament, a cold and wet forecast reduced the format to 36 holes. Saturday's action was then scheduled for 10:30, but course conditions forced a 2:30 p.m. start.
Just behind Johnson and still within reach of the lead is sophomore Ian Holt (Stow, Ohio) at 3-over 74. A logjam at the top of the leaderboard has Holt in a tie for 23rd place.
Freshman Gisli Sveinbergsson (Hafnarfjordur, Iceland) is right behind Holt with a 4-over 75. Sveinbergsson is tied for 32nd place.
Junior Josh Whalen (Napanee, Ontario) and senior Sebastian Bendsen (Vejen, Denmark) are both tied for 48th place with a 6-over 77.
The 84-golfer field is separated by 15 strokes at the midway point.
Sunday's second and final round is slated to begin at 10:30 a.m.
