KENT, Ohio – Kent State (41-12) took down Western Carolina (25-28) by a score of 3-1 Friday night to take the series victory.
Andy Ravel continued his stretch of fine starts, throwing 6.1 innings with just three hits, no walks and two strikeouts to lead the way.
It was a scoreless game until the Flashes broke through in the 5th. Tim DalPorto singled and scored when Reilly Hawkins tripled down the right field line. It became a 3-0 lead in the 6th when Mason Mamarella earned an infield single and Zarley Zalewski tripled him home. Zalewski then scored on a Dylan Rosa base hit.
The Catamounts weren't able to get a run until the 8th when they had bases loaded with no outs. However, a single tally was all they would manage as pitcher Zach Spangler and the Kent State defense shined to maintain the lead.
John Schreiber followed Ravel on the mound, allowing the lone run of the night. Spangler went a full inning with not hits and no walks. Zach Willeman closed out the game, earning his 12th save of the season as he allowed one hit and one walk in the process.
Offensively, KSU outhit WCU 6-5, with Zalewski recorded two of the Flashes' hits.
The two teams will finish the series Saturday at 1 p.m. It will be the final regular season game this season and the final game played at Schoonover Stadium for five seniors.
