Flashes Blank Canisius 3-0 in Home Opener

KENT, Ohio- Three second half goals were the difference in Kent State soccer's 3-0 win over Canisius on Sunday, Aug, 21 at Zoeller Field. With the win, the Flashes move to 1-1-0 on the year, while the Golden Griffins drop to 0-2-0.
After a slow first half, Kent State's Kristen Brots headed in the game's first goal in the 61st minute. Hayden Pascoe gave the ball off to Jaime Eiben who crossed the ball into the box and found the head of Brots who put it passed the keeper.
In the 66th minute, senior Jenna Hellstrom scored her first goal of the season just minutes her first shot on goal of the game was blocked by the Canisius goalie. Katie Kovacs recorded the assist on the goal as she played the ball through to Hellstrom who dribbled the ball around the goalie and scored.
Canisius' best chance to score came on a penalty kick in the 69th minute following a hand ball by the Golden Flashes in the box. Canisius' Hope Gilchrist took the shot for the Golden Griffins, firing a low shot into the corner that Kent State goalie Ashleah McDonald met with a diving stop to prevent the goal.
McDonald got her first win and clean sheet of the season with three saves behind a strong defensive effort from Paige Culver, Jaime Eiben, Abbie Lawson, Brittany Maisano and Trine Seistrup.
Hayden Pascoe added to her assist from the Brots goal with a goal of her own in the 73rd minute off a corner kick from Mackenzie Lesnick.
The final count on shots on goal and corner kicks favored the Golden Flashes over Canisius 11-3 and 10-6, respectively.
The Golden Flashes return action on Sunday, Aug. 28 as they travel to take on the Dayton Flyers at 12 p.m.
