Hellstrom Breaks School Points Record in 2-1 Senior Night Win

KENT,Ohio- With a goal and an assist in the first half, senior Jenna Hellstrom broke the Kent State soccer points record as the Golden Flashes defeated Indiana State on Senior Night from Dix Stadium on Friday evening. The Flashes (4-1-0) picked up their fourth consecutive win while the Sycamores drop to 4-5-0 on the season.
For her career Hellstrom now has 28 goals and 25 assists for a total of 81 points, breaking Kimberly Dimitrioff's record of 78 set in 2007.
Kristen Brots got the scoring started in the 16th minute of the game as Hellstrom crossed the ball into the box where Brots met it with her head and put it passed the Indiana State keeper. For Brots, it's her second goal of the season and seventh of her career. She scored in similar fashion in the Flashes' 3-0 over Canisius earlier this season.
It didn't take long for the Flashes to strike again as Hellstrom got free down the left side of box in the 19th minute and fired a shot, giving the keeper no chance to make a save.
Kent State's defense was strong throughout the game, especially in the first half, not allowing the Sycamores to register a shot on goal.
The Flashes nearly added a third goal in the second half off a Paige Culver free kick that skipped just passed the outstretched feet of two Kent State attackers in the box.
The Sycamores would get on the scoresheet in the 85th minute as Maddie Orf played a long pass out of the defensive end to Katie Wells who tracked the ball down and slotted passed McDonald.
The Golden Flashes totaled 17 shots going two for two on shots on goal, while the Sycamores registered eight shots going one of four on shots on goal.
Prior to the game, Kent State honored it's five seniors: Jenna Hellstrom, Abigail LaVigna, Abbie Lawson, Brittany Maisano and Morgan Williams.
Up next, the Golden Flashes head to Toledo on Friday, Sept. 23 to open up conference play for the 2016 season.
