MUNCIE, Ind. - The Kent State soccer team (7-4-1, 3-1 MAC) fell on the road, 1-0, to Ball State (5-5-2, 3-0-1 MAC) at the BSU Soccer Field on Sunday afternoon. The Cardinals scored the lone goal of the match in the 35th minute, and Kent State was unable to find the back of the net.
Julia Elvbo scored the game-winner for Ball State in the first period off a rebound in front of the goal, which she shot into the left side of the net. It is Elvbo's fourth goal of the season and third on the weekend. Yela Ziswiler added an assist.
The Cardinals controlled the pace of the match, edging Kent State in shots (13-9) and corner kicks (6-0). The Golden Flashes registered six of nine shots on goal, compared to seven of 13 for Ball State. The Flashes had a couple of opportunities late, but could not capitalize.
Maddie Holmes, Vital Kats and Karly Hellstrom each had two shots, with Hellstrom putting both on goal.
Goalkeeper Ashleah McDonald (0.76 gaa) played well, allowing one goal while facing thirteen shots, and is the tough luck loser dropping to 6-3-1. Ball State's Alyssa Heinstschel made six saves while facing nine shots and advances to 4-2-0.
Kent State's defense has not allowed multiple-goals in a match in a month, since allowing two goals to Florida Gulf Coast on Sept 1. The back row has been an asset all year, as no team has score more than two goals in a match.
Kent State continues Mid-American Conference play on Thursday, Oct. 5 at 7 p.m. at Dix Stadium, for a Crystal Clinic Wagon Wheel Challenge tilt with Akron. Kent State will travel to Buffalo on Sunday, Oct. 8 at noon to begin a three-match road trip.
