
Flashes Defeat Western Michigan, 1-0, for Fourth Straight Victory

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Golden Flashes (11-4-1, 7-1-0 MAC) won their fourth match in a row over Western Michigan (8-6-1, 3-4-1 MAC), 1-0, on Sunday afternoon at the WMU Soccer Complex. Kent State has shutout a league-best 10 opponents, and stands atop the Mid-American Conference standings with 21 points.
It was a scoreless till the 82nd minute, when freshman Rachel Ernst scored the game-winner on an unassisted goal. It is Ernst's second game-winner of the year as her goal on Sept. 24 led Kent State to a 1-0 win over Eastern Michigan.
Kent State is on a four-match winning streak and has won seven of its last eight. In the winning streak, the Flashes have outscored their opponents, 6-0. Kent State's 10th shutout is the second-most in a season in program history.
Overall, Kent State led in shots (15-6), shots on goal (6-2) and corner kicks (5-3). Freshman Maddie Holmes led in shots with three.
Senior Katie Kingsbury (0.40 gaa) was stellar in net, picking up her third shutout of the campaign while making two saves. Western Michigan's Stephanie Heber made four saves while allowing one goal. The Broncos were also credited with a team save.
Kent State improved its all-time record against the Broncos to 12-6-3.
The Golden Flashes play their last three matches at Dix Stadium to close out the regular-season. Kent State hosts Toledo on Thursday, Oct. 19 at 7 p.m. to begin the home stand.
