MUNCIE, Ind. – Goals by Laila Richter and Ines Delpech keyed a second-half offensive breakthrough that lifted Kent State to a 2-1 road victory over Ball State on Friday.
After the Golden Flashes and Cardinals played the first half to a scoreless tie, Richter beat Ball State goalie Grace Chavez at 40:18 of the second half to put KSU up 1-0. Clara Rodriguez Seto notched her sixth assist of the season to trail only teammate Jessica Nesbitt (7 assists) among MAC leaders.
Delpech gave KSU some breathing room at 57:24 with her fifth goal of the year on an assist by Jamie Fries.
"We had a lot of opportunities and then finally scored a nice goal in the 40th minute on an advantage play where Laila was there to put it away," said Kent State head coach Kathleen Wiler, whose team improved to 5-9 overall and 2-1 in Mid-American Conference play. "Then we added a really nice goal on a corner in the 57th minute."
Abby Ferenczy cut Kent State's lead in half with 5:29 remaining. The closing goal was one of Ball State's few scoring opportunities of the afternoon. The Cardinals were outshot 13-3 with the Flashes managing 10 shots on goal to Ball State's one.
"We played really well defensively," said Wiler. "We put a ton of pressure on them and got a lot of interceptions. It was a really good team effort…This one was like any game in the MAC in October. We had to grind it out, and it is always good any time you can get a conference win like that on the road. Now we just have to keep it going into Central."
The Flashes return to action on Oct. 13 when they visit Central Michigan.
