After making a strong opening statement in the first week of competition, Kent State (3-0) returns to action this weekend with a pair of dual meets Saturday and a unique competition Sunday at the Journeymen Collegiate Classic. The Golden Flashes will take on Virginia Saturday at 9:30 a.m. followed by Hofstra at 1:30 p.m., in the Journeymen Northeast Duals at Shenendehowa High School in Clifton Park, New York.
Sunday at the Journeyman Collegiate Classic, Kent State will be among 14 teams competing in round robin pool formats for each weight class at Hudson Valley Community College in Troy, New York.
Live video of both days can be seen on FloWrestling with a subscription. Competition is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Last Friday, the Flashes won pair of dual meets in convincing fashion at the M.A.C. Center and traveled to Clarion, Pennsylvania that evening for a 23-12 dual victory over Utah Valley. On Sunday, five Flashes placed in the top four at the Clarion Open, competing unattached. Among those competing this weekend, junior Casey Sparkman placed second at 157 and senior Stephen Suglio was fourth at 197. Sophomore 141-pounder Tim Rooney and redshirt freshman 174-pounder Dylan Barreiro each went 5-1, reaching the consolation finals. New NCAA rules prevented them from competing in a seventh match.
Virginia also competed in the Clarion Open this past weekend. Junior 174-pounder Will Schany and redshirt freshman 125-pounder Louie Hayes each won individual titles. Sophomore 149-pounder Sam Krivus placed third, while senior 165-pounder Andrew Atkinson placed fourth.
Hofstra opened its season Sunday with a 30-6 victory over Franklin & Marshall. Senior heavyweight Michael Hughes is ranked No. 11 after going 29-2 during a redshirt season last year.
